Critical questions concerning flood damaged structures

1) Are the structures of buildings such as shophouses, commercial buildings and housing estates strong enough to tolerate water pressure?

This basically depends on the construction standard. Normally, concrete buildings are stronger than those made of wood since there are steel bars inside the concrete. If the building is designed and constructed according to professional standards, with sufficient steel bars and proper pillar size, it is quite certain that the structure can withstand the pressure of no more than two metres of water without grave structural damage or falling down.

2) Which part of the building can be damaged most in massive flooding?

Brick walls and the floors are the most vulnerable during a flood because they are the parts that come into direct contact with the water. The larger the surface, the more area will be affected by the floodwater and the pressure that comes with it. So, damage is more likely to occur to these parts compared to beams and pillars.

At one metre high, the water will exert pressure of 1,000 kilogrammes or a tonne per cubic metre. This will be doubled if it is two metres high. In reality, the wall and surface are only designed to put up with pressure of 100-200 kilogrammes per cubic metre for the walls and 200-300 kilogrammes per cubic metre for the floor. Therefore,雷诺护垫, huge pressure from water up to two metres deep may cause the wall to collapse and the floor to become warped and cracked. Wooden structures may become loosened.

3) What are the chances of the beams and pillars cracking?

Beams and pillars may be damaged if they are too small. Knock-down materials that are widely used in new housing estates can be a problem as there may be cracks in the connecting parts.

Besides, long-standing floodwater may devour parts of small pillars,Court finishes hearing Nonthaburi flood case-wire mesh, exposing the steel bars to the water and causing them to rust. If this is the case, they urgently need to be fixed or the structure may crumble. If the cracks are severe, the beams will need to be replaced

Remain calm if you spot damages and cracks on beams and pillars as these may only be on the surface. If you find any cracks, call an engineer to check them

4) What about the foundation?

There are two types of foundation, one with foundation piles underground and the other on the ground. Watch out for the underground structure to make sure that the foundation pillars remain intact. At the same time, the water may wash away the soil that holds the on-the ground foundation, causing the structure to become unbalanced.

5) Buildings with basements need special care.

Pumping water from a flooded basement must be carried out step-by-step with extreme care. Doing it in a rush can cause further damage. Initially, it’s necessary to keep pressure balanced between the water in and outside the basement, or pressure outside the basement will push the wall, causing serious cracks in the structure. It’s better to wait until the water outside recedes before siphoning the water from the basement.

6) Some guidelines for structural repairs.

If not severely damage,电焊苗床网, construction adhesives can be used for cracks in the walls and beams. The rust on steel bars needs to be removed and covered with rust-proof paint. Reinforcing the steel bars may be necessary.

Broken pillars must be removed and replaced immediately to prevent the structure from falling down.

Warped floors and walls must be fixed or rebuilt.

If the main structure slips from the foundation, it’s necessary to have a new foundation built. Call an engineer

7) Other concerns in addition to structural repairs.

Further checks are needed for damage to other parts of the house, like parquet floors, doors and windows as well as paint and wallpaper. Some works, like the electrical system, require a professional.

If there are any doubts about inspecting buildings, call the Engineering Institute of Thailand on 02-319-24103. From www.thaireform.in.th/news-health-system/item/ 6671-2011-11-14-10-03-35.html. Military Barriers/Hesco Bastions

Information

The QIAOSHI’s Military Barriers or Hesco Bastions is a modern gabion used for flood control and military fortification. It is made of a collapsible metal wire mesh container and heavy duty fabric liner, and used as a temporary to semi-permanent dike or barrier against blast or small-arms. One of the less heralded life- and labor-saving devices of war, it is used on nearly every United States Military base in Iraq as well as on NATO bases in Afghanistan.

Originally designed for use on beaches and marshes for erosion and flood control, the Hesco Bastion quickly became a popular security device in the 1990s.

Assembly
Assembling the Hesco Bastion entails unfolding it and (if available) using a front end loader to fill it with sand, dirt or gravel. The placement of the barrier is generally very similar to the placement of a sandbag barrier or earth berm except that room must generally be allowed for the equipment used to fill the barrier. The main advantage of Military Barrier, strongly contributing to their popularity with troops and flood fighters, is the quick and easy setup. Previously, people had to fill sandbags, a slow undertaking, with one worker filling about 20 sandbags per hour. Workers using Military Barrier and a front end loader can do ten times the work of those using sandbags.
The Hesco Barrier come in a variety of sizes. Most of the barriers can also be stacked, and they are shipped collapsed in compact sets. Example dimensions of typical configurations are 46″ x 36″ x 32 (1.4m x 1.1m x 9.8m) to 7 x 5 x 100 (2.1m x 1.5m x 30m).
A new system of Hesco Bastion developed specially for military use is deployed from a container, which is dragged along the line of ground where the barrier is to be formed, unfolding up to several hundred meters of barrier in minutes, ready for filling with soil by a backhoe.

Protection
Filled with sand, 60 centimetres (24 inches) of barrier thickness will stop rifle bullets and shell fragments. It takes 1.5 metres (five feet) of thickness to prevent penetration by a rocket propelled grenade round. Approximately 1.2 metres (four feet) of thickness provides protection against most car bombs.

Phone donor scam suspects arrested

Published: 3/12/2011 at 12:00 AM
Newspaper section: News

Two people have been arrested for allegedly rigging the telephone lines of several call centres for flood donors and diverting an estimated 5 million baht to themselves, police said.

Rungroj Maddeen, 31, and his half-sister Marisa Ranjuanjit, 25,Tunnelling toward a city with no more flood woes-HESCO, of Nakhon Si Thammarat, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a phone scam which tricked flood donors into transferring money to their bank accounts. RATTASEEMA PONGSAN

Rungroj Maddeen,Floods Factories reopening-Hesco Bastion, 31, and his half-sister Marisa Ranjuanjit, 25, were nabbed after Workpoint Entertainment, a media company, asked the Crime Suppression Division to track down a gang which had tampered with its telephone system to steal the donated money.

The company detected something unusual shortly after it started raising funds for the flood victims on Oct 24 through its television programme Ratcharot Ma Koey.

The audience was encouraged to call the contact centre to donate. But after a week no calls had been made.

A Workpoint Entertainment staff member made a call to the number displayed on the programme and found it had been redirected to an unidentified person who posed as a company representative.

The company changed the telephone number, only for the line to be meddled with again. Losses were estimated at up to 1 million baht.

CSD commander Pol Maj Gen Supisarn Phakdeenaruenart said yesterday the suspects were believed to have tampered with the hotlines of at least two television programmes that raised funds for flood victims.

As well as Ratcharot Ma Koey, news talk programme Khao Khon Kon Khao, was also targetted. Both programmes are aired on Monday to Friday on Mcot Plc’s Channel 9.

Pol Maj Gen Supisarn said the suspects admitted tampering with the phone lines of several other programmes broadcast on local cable television stations.

Mr Rungroj told police investigators that he made off with about 80,000 baht and spent it on drugs and other items.

However, Pol Maj Gen Supisarn said police would have to check with banks to find out how much the suspects had stolen.

Initially police has estimated the total theft amount at about 5 million baht.

Stainless steel :Stainless steel is selected for their wear-resisting, heat-resisting, acid-resisting and corrosion resisting characteristics. Many different grades of stainless are used in wire cloth.T304 is the most common, wire mesh product, but other are used in specific applications to take advantage of each grades unique properties. The wire mesh made of stainless steel is extensively used in mining , chemical industry, food industry and pharmaceutical industry.

Our stainless steel wire mesh products are generally made of stainless steel Type 302,304,304L,316,316L,321 and 430 etc. We produce wire cloth in all kinds of forms. The weaving is determined according to our customers specific requirements, such as the material, the wire diameter, the size of the mesh ,annealed tie wire-Chain Wire,Chain Fence, gabiony box, width and length.

Plain weave: Each weft wire passes over one and under one warp wire, and each warp wire passes over one and under one weft wire, every weft wire have and warp wire the same diameter.

Characteristics: square aperture ,黑铁丝电焊网-Nails,high flow through , relative high open area,wire-Welded Wire Mesh, as result less pressure drop during filtration suitable for all kinds of filtration up to 63 m.

Plain Dutch weave: woven as a plain weave. Each warp wire and each weft wire passes over and under the next adjacent complementary wire, as in normal Plain Weave,外墙保温网, except the warp wires are larger in diameter than the weft wires. This allows a greater mesh count in the weft direction.

Characteristics: “zero”aperture, more solid than square or rectangular mesh, relative high open area, suitable for all kinds of filtration.

Twill weave: Each weft wire passes over two and under two warp wires, and each warp wire passes over and under two weft wires. The wire diameter for both(warp and weft)is mostly the same.

Characteristics: square aperture, less rigid than plain weave, especially suitable for deforming, strong wire cloth due to ratio of wire diameter and aperture, it is mostly used for filtration less than 63 m .

Dutch twilled weave: Each warp wire and each weft wire passes over and under the next two adjacent complementary wires, as in a normal Twill Weave, except the warp wires are larger in diameter than the weft wires. This allows a greater mesh count in the weft direction. This weave pattern enables the weft wires to be woven more densely, and much smaller aperture sizes can be achieved without forsaking cloth thickness.

Characteristics: “zero” aperture, light-proof woven, high resistance due to tight wire position, extreme low absolute grade of fineness(down to 5-6m),high filtration performance in case of low viscose medium, it is the finest filtration in hydraulic systems, especially for critical applications as aero-space, fuel-and combustion.

Gabion are baskets manufactured from 8×10 double twisted hexagonal woven steel wire mesh, as per ASTM A975-97 Gabions are filled with stones at the project site to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures such as retaining walls, channel linings,Stone Cage, and weirs for erosion control projects. The steel wire used in the manufacture of the gabion is heavily Galfan (zinc-5% aluminum-mischmetal [Zn-5 Al-MM] alloy) coated soft temper steel. A PVC coating is then applied to provide additional protection for use in polluted, contaminated or aggressive environments: in salt, fresh water, wire mesh-Chain Wire,Chain Fence, acid soil or wherever the risk of corrosion is present. The PVC coating has a nominal thickness of 0.02 in. (0.50 mm). The gabion is divided into cells by diaphragms positioned at approximately 3 ft (0.9m) centers. To reinforce the structure, all mesh panel edges are selvedged with a wire having a greater diameter. Gabions shall be manufactured and shipped with all components mechanically connected at the production facility.

Reno Mattress

The Reno mattress is a structure made of hexagonal double twisted wire mesh. Reno mattresses are filled with stones at the project site to form flexible and permeable, monolithic structures such as river bank protection and channel linings for erosion control. The steel wire used to manufacture the mattress is heavily zinc-coated soft temper steel. The standard combinations of mesh is shown in Table.
